Unlimited data business SIM only plans

Unlimited data takes the guesswork out of mobile data for staff who hotspot, video call or work on the road. It is not unlimited everywhere or for everything, so the terms matter. We can help you decide which lines need it and which do not.

In short

An unlimited data business SIM gives a line as much UK mobile data as it needs, under the network's fair use or acceptable use terms. It suits staff who hotspot laptops, make video calls or work in the field. Unlimited usually means UK only: roaming has its own fair use limits, and terms on tethering and speed vary.

Who needs unlimited data

Unlimited data is worth paying for on lines where usage is high or hard to predict. Typical examples:

  • Hotspotting laptops: staff who connect a laptop to their phone's data instead of finding Wi-Fi
  • Video calls on the move: people who join Microsoft Teams or other video meetings from site, car or train
  • Field and mobile teams: engineers, surveyors, sales staff and drivers who rarely sit at a desk
  • Temporary or remote sites: a phone or router acting as the main connection for a few days or weeks
  • Directors and travellers: people who cannot afford to run out of data at the wrong moment
  • Data-only devices: tablets or routers that carry a lot of traffic, on a business data only SIM

For a desk-based team on office Wi-Fi most of the day, unlimited data may be more than they need. The answer for most businesses is a mix: unlimited data on the lines that need it, capped allowances on the rest, all on one account. Our overview of business SIM only plans explains how those structures fit together.

What unlimited means on a business plan

On business SIM only, "unlimited" usually refers to UK data, and each network sets out its limits in its own fair use or acceptable use terms, including how tethering, roaming and any speed limits work. Three Business, for example, states that unlimited data, minutes and texts are UK only, and that its fair use policies apply in Go Roam destinations.

Fair use and acceptable use policies exist to stop a SIM being used in ways the plan was not designed for, such as running a whole office's connection through one phone line, or reselling the service. Normal business use of a phone is what these plans are designed for. If you have a specific use in mind (a router at a temporary site, say), it is worth checking the terms before you buy.

Where we supply a plan, the network's terms for that plan apply, and we confirm them at quote.

Roaming on unlimited plans

Unlimited UK data does not mean unlimited data abroad. Roaming is handled separately, and networks apply their own fair use limits to data used overseas.

Three Business, for example, has three Go Roam zones (Go Roam in Europe, Go Roam Around the World and Go Roam Around the World Extra), with fair use policies applying in them, and on a 24-month unlimited UK data plan you can add inclusive roaming to only the SIMs that need it. That per-SIM approach is useful: a team where two people travel regularly does not need roaming on every line.

Before you choose a plan for people who travel, check:

  • Which destinations are covered: zones and country lists differ between networks and plans
  • How much data you can use abroad: the fair use limit, and what happens beyond it
  • Daily charges or inclusive roaming: whether you pay per day abroad or have roaming built in
  • Roaming caps: a spend cap on roaming, so one trip cannot create a large bill

We can set roaming up line by line so the travellers have it and the rest of the team does not.

Tethering and personal hotspot

Using a phone as a personal hotspot (tethering) is one of the main reasons businesses want unlimited data. Three Business says Personal Hotspot in the UK uses your existing data allowance, so on an unlimited plan a laptop connected to a phone draws on the same UK data.

Hotspotting is convenient, but it is not the right fit for every situation. A laptop that is online all day through a phone drains the phone's battery and ties the two devices together. For staff who work from a vehicle or a temporary site most of the time, a separate data SIM in a mobile Wi-Fi device or router can work better. See mobile broadband SIM only for that set-up, and our sister site for business mobile broadband and 5G routers.

Whichever route you take, check the plan terms for any limits on tethering before you rely on it.

When a capped plan is enough

A capped allowance can be the better choice when:

  • Usage is steady and modest: the line uses roughly the same amount each month, well within a smaller allowance
  • Most work happens on Wi-Fi: office-based staff who rarely use mobile data for anything heavy
  • The device does one job: a payment terminal, alarm or tracker using small amounts of data on an IoT SIM card
  • You want a firm ceiling: a capped plan with a spend cap gives a predictable monthly charge

The way to decide is to look at actual usage. Most networks show data used per line in the online account or on itemised bills. Lines that are consistently near or over their allowance are candidates for unlimited data; lines that use a fraction of theirs may be on a bigger plan than they need. A shared data pool is another option when a few people use a lot and most use little.

How we help

Unlimited data is one decision among several, and it is easy to overpay by putting every line on the largest plan. We can:

  • Review usage per line: from bills or usage reports you share, to see who genuinely needs unlimited data
  • Mix plans on one account: unlimited where it is needed and smaller allowances elsewhere
  • Set roaming per SIM: so the travellers are covered and nobody else pays for it
  • Check the terms: fair use, tethering and roaming terms for the plan you are considering
  • Keep your numbers: move the team across with PAC codes

Frequently asked questions

Is unlimited data on a business SIM really unlimited?

It is unlimited UK data, subject to the network's fair use or acceptable use policy. Three Business, for example, says its unlimited data, minutes and texts are UK only. Roaming has separate fair use limits.

Can I use unlimited data abroad?

Not without limit. Networks apply fair use limits to data used abroad, and roaming may be charged daily or included on some plans. Three Business, for example, applies fair use policies in its Go Roam destinations. Check the destinations and limits for the plan you choose.

Can I tether a laptop on an unlimited business SIM?

Usually, yes. Three Business says Personal Hotspot in the UK uses your existing data allowance. Check the plan's terms for any limits on tethering, and consider a separate data SIM in a mobile Wi-Fi device if a laptop needs a connection all day.

Do all my staff need unlimited data?

Rarely. Most businesses do better with unlimited data on the lines that use a lot, such as field staff and people who hotspot, and smaller allowances on lines that mostly use Wi-Fi. Looking at a few months of usage per line shows where the split should be.

Is there unlimited data on business data-only SIMs?

Yes, on some networks. Three Business sells unlimited data business data-only SIMs, available as an eSIM or a physical SIM. Unlimited data is UK only, with fair use policies when roaming.
