Mobile broadband SIM only for business

If you already have a router, mobile Wi-Fi unit or laptop with a SIM slot, you only need the airtime. A mobile broadband SIM only plan gives that hardware a data connection on a business account, and we focus on keeping that airtime cost down.

In short

Mobile broadband SIM only is a data SIM, without a device, for a router, mobile Wi-Fi unit, dongle or laptop you already own. Businesses use it to get temporary sites, vehicles and small offices online, or as a backup to fixed broadband. The hardware must be unlocked and support the network; we can supply the SIMs.

What mobile broadband SIM only means

Mobile broadband is internet access over a mobile network instead of a fixed line. It comes in two parts: a device that turns the mobile signal into a connection (a router, a portable mobile Wi-Fi unit, a USB dongle or the modem inside a laptop) and a SIM that provides the data.

Mobile broadband SIM only covers the second part: you keep or buy the hardware separately and pay only for the data. It is a type of business data only SIM, set up for the larger data use a shared connection tends to have.

SIM only suits businesses that already have routers (perhaps bought outright to a specification their IT team prefers), that want to reuse hardware across sites, or that want to replace routers on their own schedule while keeping the airtime lean. If you need a router as well, our sister site covers business mobile broadband and 5G routers.

Where businesses use it

  • Temporary and pop-up sites: construction site cabins, events, seasonal shops and site offices where a fixed line would take too long or cost too much to install
  • Backup to fixed broadband: a router with a data SIM that keeps tills, card payments or a small office online if the main line fails
  • New premises: a stopgap while a fixed line or leased line is being installed
  • Vehicles: an in-vehicle router giving Wi-Fi to the tablets and laptops inside a van, bus or mobile unit
  • Lone and remote workers: a mobile Wi-Fi unit for someone who works from different places and needs more than a phone hotspot
  • Laptops: a data SIM or eSIM in a laptop with a built-in mobile modem, so it connects without Wi-Fi

For a main office connection, fixed broadband or a leased line is usually the right foundation, with mobile broadband as the backup rather than the primary link. Forever Group can also help with business connectivity if you are reviewing both.

What your hardware needs

A mobile broadband SIM is only as good as the device it goes into. Before ordering, check:

  • It is unlocked: hardware bought from a network may be locked to it; ask that network to unlock it before you move to another
  • It supports the network's bands: most recent routers do, but older or imported hardware may not support every band a UK network uses
  • 4G or 5G: a 5G router only gets 5G speeds where the network has 5G coverage; elsewhere it uses 4G. A 4G router will not use 5G at all
  • The right SIM size or eSIM: check which SIM size the device takes (standard, micro or nano) or whether it supports eSIM
  • Antenna options: a router that takes external antennas can make a real difference in a building with weak indoor signal
  • 2G and 3G only kit is retiring: Mobile UK, the operators' trade body, says the mobile providers have confirmed to the UK Government that they do not plan to offer 2G and 3G services beyond 2033, and that a device which cannot use 4G or 5G will need replacing to keep accessing data

Placement matters as much as the device. A router on a windowsill on the side of the building facing the nearest mast will often outperform the same router in a back office. Check each network's coverage checker for the exact address before you choose.

Choosing the data plan

Shared connections use much more data than a single tablet, because several people and devices are behind them. When you size a mobile broadband SIM:

  1. Count what will connect: laptops, phones, card machines, cameras and anything else on the router's Wi-Fi.
  2. Estimate the heavy users: video calls, cloud backups, CCTV uploads and software updates use the most.
  3. Decide between a capped plan with a spend cap, and unlimited data where the network offers it. Read the fair use terms either way.
  4. Choose the term. A temporary site may suit a short or rolling term; a permanent backup line may suit 12 or 24 months.
  5. Set spend and roaming caps when the SIM is ordered, so an unexpected spike does not become an unexpected bill.

Networks sell mobile broadband data SIMs on a range of terms, from rolling monthly plans to 24 months, and the term for your lines is confirmed at quote. Our guide to business SIM only contracts explains term lengths, price rises and early termination.

Mobile broadband as a backup line

Many businesses first think about mobile broadband when a fixed line fails and the card machine stops. A data SIM in a router that can take over from the main connection is a common and simple form of resilience.

A few points make backup work properly:

  • Test it: unplug the main line on a quiet day and check the tills, phones and key systems keep working
  • Keep the SIM active and in date: a backup SIM that has been cancelled, capped at zero or left on an expired term does not help
  • Size it for the emergency, not the average: a backup line may sit idle for months and then carry the whole site for a day
  • Check the router's failover: some routers switch automatically; others need setting up or a manual change
  • Consider voice: if your phones run over the internet, check how they behave on a mobile connection

If your business phones run over the internet, our sister site on BT Cloud Voice covers cloud telephony from Forever Communications.

How we help

We can help you get the airtime right for the hardware you have:

  • Check your kit: whether your routers or mobile Wi-Fi units are unlocked and suitable for the network you are considering
  • Check coverage at the address: using each network's coverage checker for the exact locations
  • Supply across networks: EE Business and Three Business, and O2 Business and Vodafone Business too
  • Match the term to the job: short terms for temporary sites, longer terms for permanent backup lines
  • Set caps from the start: so a shared connection cannot run up charges unnoticed

Plans and terms are confirmed at quote. Contact us with the hardware you have and where it will be used.

How Forever Communications helps with business SIM only

We help UK organisations choose, switch and run business SIM only plans, data SIMs and eSIMs for the phones and devices they already own.

  • Start with what you have: we look at your current contracts, end dates, users, devices and how much data people really use before suggesting anything new
  • More than one network: we supply SIM only plans on EE Business and Three Business, and we can also supply O2 Business and Vodafone Business, so you can choose by coverage where your people work
  • Keep your numbers: we help you plan the move with PAC codes or STAC codes so existing business mobile numbers come with you
  • SIMs for every device: voice SIMs, eSIM SIM only that works with your device management, business data only SIMs for tablets, routers and vehicles, and fleet SIM cards on one account
  • Controls that suit a business: we can help you set up spend caps, bars and user changes through the network's own business tools

Forever Communications is part of Forever Group. Plans, terms and pricing are confirmed at quote, so contact us and we will set out the options that fit.

Frequently asked questions

What is a mobile broadband SIM only plan?

It is a data-only SIM, without a device, for a router, mobile Wi-Fi unit, dongle or laptop you already own. You pay for the data allowance only. On a business account it is billed to the business and managed with your other SIMs.

Can I put any data SIM in my 4G or 5G router?

Usually, if the router is unlocked and supports the network's frequency bands. A router bought from one network may be locked to it, so ask that network to unlock it first. A 5G router uses 5G only where the network has 5G coverage.

Is mobile broadband good enough to replace business broadband?

For a small or temporary site it can be. For a permanent office, fixed broadband or a leased line is normally the main connection, with mobile broadband as a backup. Coverage and signal strength at the exact address make the biggest difference.

How much data does a business router need?

More than a single device, because everyone on the Wi-Fi shares it. Video calls, backups and CCTV push usage up. Count what will connect, estimate the heavy users, and set a spend cap or choose unlimited data where the network offers it.

Can I use mobile broadband as a backup if my line goes down?

Yes. A router with a data SIM that takes over when the fixed line fails is a common way to keep tills, card payments and small offices online. Test the failover before you need it and keep the SIM active.
