In short
Business SIM only contracts run on fixed terms, typically 24 or 12 months, or as rolling monthly plans. Longer terms usually lower the monthly charge; rolling plans keep you flexible. Business prices are quoted ex VAT, networks set out their annual April price rises in advance, and leaving before the term ends can carry an early termination charge.

Contract lengths for business SIM only
Business SIM only plans come in three broad shapes: 24 months, 12 months and rolling monthly. Each network sets its own options; Three Business SIM Only plans, for example, run on 1, 12 or 24-month terms, and our network pages describe each network's range.
For the lines we supply, the term is confirmed at quote. The general trade-offs are the same on every network:
| Term | Monthly charge | Flexibility | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 months | Usually the lowest of the three | Least: you are committed for two years | Stable teams with predictable needs |
| 12 months | Usually in between | Moderate: a yearly chance to review | Teams expecting some change |
| 1 month (rolling) | Usually the highest | Most: change or end with notice | Short projects, new starters, uncertain plans |
Many businesses mix terms: the core team on a longer term and a few lines on rolling plans for contractors, seasonal staff or projects.

Rolling monthly plans: the business pay as you go
Businesses searching for "pay as you go" on a business SIM usually want one of two things: no long commitment, or tight control of spend. A rolling 1-month or 30-day SIM only plan covers the first. It is a contract, but one you can end with notice rather than waiting out a fixed term.
Rolling plans suit:
- Temporary staff and contractors: lines that may only be needed for a few months
- Projects and events: a SIM for a site office or a short-term router
- Trying a network: testing coverage at your sites before moving the whole team
- Uncertain headcount: a growing or changing business that does not want to fix numbers for two years
For spend control, a spend cap on any plan does much of what people want from pay as you go: it limits charges outside the plan so the monthly cost stays predictable. A rolling plan with a spend cap gives you both.
Rolling plans are also available as an eSIM on networks that support it, which makes short-term lines quick to set up; see eSIM SIM only.
Prices, VAT and annual price rises
Read these carefully on any quote:
Prices are ex VAT
Business mobile prices are quoted excluding VAT, and the networks show their business prices that way. Whether your business can reclaim the VAT depends on your own VAT position, so check with your accountant.
Annual price rises are set out in advance
Networks set out their annual price rises before you sign, applied each April, and your quote and contract show how they apply to your lines. Over a 24-month term that means at least one rise during the contract, so include it when you compare the total cost.
Payment methods
Check how the bills will be paid. The payment method for your lines is set out in your quote.
Our guide to business SIM only deals explains how to compare quotes on total cost rather than the headline monthly figure.
Is a business SIM only contract the right fit for you?
We will check it against your systems and requirements and recommend the right option.
Credit checks and eligibility
Networks provide business mobile service on monthly billing, so they check the business before accepting an order. O2 Business says orders are subject to status, credit and affordability assessments, and Vodafone Business says credit checks, status and its standard acceptance criteria apply. Expect checks of this kind on any network.
What you will usually need:
- Business details: legal name, trading address and, for companies, the registered company number
- Who is authorised: the person signing must be able to commit the business
- Banking details: for the Direct Debit
- Trading history: newer businesses may face more questions or limits on the number of lines
Three Business sells business plans to business owners and the self-employed. Our guide on how to get a business SIM card walks through the steps for sole traders, partnerships and companies.
Leaving early, notice and switching
If you leave a fixed-term contract before it ends, the network can charge an early termination charge, usually linked to the monthly charges left on the term. Ofcom's switching rules help here: when you request a PAC (to keep your number) or a STAC (to leave without it), your provider must send information about any early termination charge with the code. That lets you see the cost before you commit to moving.
Ofcom also says your old provider must not charge you for any notice period after the switching date, so you do not pay for the old service and the new one at the same time once you have switched. Ofcom says a PAC or STAC is valid for 30 days.
The practical steps are covered in our guides to the PAC code, the STAC code and porting multiple mobile numbers. Our hub on how to keep your number explains the whole process.
Adding and removing lines mid-term
Teams change during a contract, so it is worth knowing how the terms handle it before you sign:
- New lines: ask what term a line added part-way through will run on, and whether it can end on the same date as the rest of the account
- Removing a line: ending one line early can carry an early termination charge for that line, even if the rest of the account carries on
- Shared data: on a pooled plan, check how the pool changes when lines are added or removed
- Leavers: a line can usually be reassigned to a new starter rather than ended, keeping the number with the business
Lining up end dates (sometimes called co-terminous lines) makes the next review much simpler, because the whole account can move or renew at once. Our page on fleet SIM cards covers running a changing team on one account.
When your contract ends
At the end of a fixed term the contract does not usually stop on its own: the line typically carries on until you change it. That is the moment to review.
- Note the end dates: keep a list of when each line's term ends; they often differ across a team
- Check usage: look at what each line used over recent months against its allowance
- Review your devices: decide which phones stay in service and which to refresh, bought separately on your own schedule; see buying business phones separately
- Get quotes: compare across networks on total cost, including price rises
- Switch or re-contract: keep your numbers with a PAC, or agree a new term with your current network
When we quote, we can list each line's end date with you so you know when the next review is due.
How we help
Contract terms are where business mobile costs drift. We can:
- Read the terms with you: term, price rises, payment method and early termination
- Mix terms sensibly: longer terms for the core team, rolling plans for lines that may not last
- Time the switch: line up a move with your current contract end dates to avoid unnecessary charges
- Quote across networks: EE Business and Three Business, plus O2 Business and Vodafone Business
- Help with the switch: PAC requests, switch dates and ordering physical SIMs or eSIMs

Frequently asked questions
How long is a business SIM only contract?
Usually 24 months, 12 months or rolling monthly; the options vary by network. Three Business SIM Only plans, for example, run on 1, 12 or 24-month terms. The term for your lines is confirmed at quote.
Is there a pay as you go business SIM?
Most business plans are monthly contracts, but a rolling 1-month or 30-day SIM only plan gives similar flexibility: you can end it with notice instead of waiting out a fixed term. A spend cap keeps the monthly cost predictable.
Do business SIM only prices go up during the contract?
Usually, yes. Networks set out an annual rise in advance, applied from April, and your quote and contract show how it applies to your lines. Include the rises when you compare the total cost of a contract.
Can I leave a business SIM only contract early?
Yes, but you may pay an early termination charge for the rest of the term. Under Ofcom's rules, your provider must send information about any early termination charge with your PAC or STAC, so you can see the cost before you switch.
Are business SIM only prices shown with VAT?
No. Business mobile prices are normally quoted ex VAT. Whether you can reclaim the VAT depends on your business's VAT position, so check with your accountant.
What happens when a business SIM only contract ends?
The line usually carries on until you change it. That is the time to check usage, compare quotes and either switch with a PAC code or agree a new term.
